District Overview
The Nisga’a school district is situated in the Nass Valley and students are primarily of Nisga’a descent. Our district is unique in that it’s small and students are members of one language and cultural group – the Nisga’a Nation. From the Nass Valley it is an easy drive to a ski hill, numerous hotsprings, many world-class fishing spots and Terrace, a regional centre that includes many amenities.
Specialty Programs
Our district is proud of its 1:1 laptop initiative, whereby all teachers and each student in grades 4 through 12 have an Apple laptop. In addition, our small fine arts magnet school has been running for several years and offers students a unique program in visual arts, music, drama, dance and journalism.
Community Culture
Nisga’a culture is vital and welcoming. Staff are welcome at feasts and other events, and are often invited to join in dance groups or to learn traditional skills.
Draw for Employees
Small classes, ample support staff, cultural activities and a high level of technology make Nisga’a a unique and rewarding place to work. Teachers are eligible for a $2,200 provincial recruitment allowance as well as local isolation allowances for Gingolx and Lakalzap. Subsidized furnished housing is available, and generous professional development opportunities support district goals.
Salary and Benefits
Teachers typically receive a comprehensive benefits package including:
- medical, dental, and extended health plans;
- group life insurance benefits;
- teachers’ pension;
- extended health benefits for dependents of deceased employees;
- accidental disability insurance;
- salary indemnity plan benefit;
- supplemental employment benefits on maternity leave;
- employee and family assistance programs.
