Make a Future is partnering with the First Nations Education Steering Committee (FNESC) to bring job opportunities in First Nations schools to BC teachers.

Starting April 28th 2014, teachers will be able to search for jobs in BC public schools and First Nations schools on one website.  Approximately 130 First Nations schools will be advertising their teaching positions and support staff jobs on Makeafuture.ca.  To help job seekers locate positions in their community, each First Nations school will be placed in one of eight regional categories:

  • Gitksan/Wet'suwet'en
  • Haida/Tsimshian/Haisla/Nisga'a
  • Kaska/Dene/Tahltan/Tagish/Inland Tlingit/Tsek'ene
  • Kootenay/Okanagan
  • Kwakwaka'wakw/Heiltsuk/Nuxalk/Oweekeno
  • Nuu-chah-nulth/Coast Salish
  • Secwepemc/St'atl'imc/Nlaka'pamux
  • Tsilhqot'in/Carrier/Sekani

Like public schools, First Nations schools experience similar challenges, such as those related to funding, and challenges related to working in geographically isolated communities. In spite of this, inspired teachers who are resilient to challenges, and motivated to make a difference in the community, will enjoy many benefits and advantages.

Teachers working in First Nations schools enjoy low student/teacher ratios; close relationships with the community; relative autonomy in making programming decisions; immersion in First Nations culture, and the opportunity to positively impact the First Nations community.

As in BC public schools, teachers working in First Nations schools must be certified by the Ministry of Education's Teacher Regulation Branch (TRB). Teachers certified in other Canadian provinces are also required to apply for TRB certification.
