School Overview
Why teach at King David High School?
At King David High School, our approach to learning is through creating active, relevant opportunities and experiences that encourage our students to question, be curious, push themselves and look for creative solutions. It is through higher-level thinking and problem-solving that students grow and develop skills and habits that will carry them throughout their futures. We are looking for people who enjoy working with adolescents, who enjoy learning themselves and who want to have fun while they work.
Our Mission, Vision and Values
King David is Vancouver’s only Jewish secondary school. Our vision is to be a dynamic leader in empowering Jewish minds and engaging Jewish hearts for the modern world. To allow our students to grow and thrive now and as adults we provide a learning experience founded in Jewish values, within an engaging, challenging and supportive academic environment that is also rich in extracurricular, leadership and volunteer opportunities.
The Community
We’re located in Metro Vancouver close to Oakridge Mall and amenities that include fitness centres, golf courses, UBC, grocery stores and more. Just 100 meters from the Canada Line and on major bus routes from downtown, our location provides easy access to neighbourhoods and communities across the Lower Mainland.
School Community
Teachers at King David are members of a family. Our faculty support one another in all aspects of their work and understand the value of maintaining a collegial environment that is safe and inclusive. Our administration supports teachers to grow, learn and take risks. Moreover, as a small school, we are better able to connect with one another and form authentic working relationships.
Lifestyle and Recreational Opportunities
People are attracted by the promise of the Vancouver West Coast lifestyle – and the gorgeous and nearby mountains and beautiful ocean contribute to an active life. Nothing beats the West Coast!
You can participate in fitness and outdoor activities, cultural events, shopping, dining, easy access to the US and the best climate in Canada.
Vancouver’s calling card is its beautiful location and its focus as a hub of healthy living – outdoor activities, yoga and a healthy attitude. It is a “slower” bigger city, so for those that love city life, but also appreciate life balance, Vancouver is the place to be.
Draw for Employees
Teachers looking to experience ongoing growth and support while working in a community of care and kindness, and who want to do meaningful work while having fun should apply to King David. Whether Jewish or not, we welcome everyone, and our community is inclusive of people who are not of the faith –inviting and warm to all. We are interested in all cultures and people are attracted to our openness.
Salary and Benefits
We pay teachers $4,000 over Vancouver School Board posted teaching salaries, and this differential will increase in the future. Other positions are offered competitive salaries with annual pay reviews and increases.
We offer a robust benefit program that includes an RRSP matching program (currently at 8%), extended health family benefits fully paid by the employer, partial gym membership and an employee discretionary Health Spending Account Allowance. We also offer personal flex days, employee and family sick days and a paid referral program.
We are committed to investing in staff professional development. All staff are supported in their professional growth goals and programs are paid for by the school.
Why you’ll love it here
This isn’t a school where you work. It’s a school where you belong. If you’re looking for a teaching experience full of promise and where you’re encouraged to grow and where you experience the collegiality of like-minded individuals, you need to teach at King David. As a smaller community, it is easy to get to know and collaborate with other staff members, and staff social activities are a priority.
Our faculty are supported in all aspects of their lives. Professional development, wellness and growth are at the forefront of our school and employment policies. We believe that you can’t do your best if you don’t feel your best, which includes feeling valued, supported and trusted.
