School Overview
James Cameron School is one of six schools recognized by the BC Ministry of Education as an accredited independent school for children diagnosed with a learning disorder such as dyslexia, dysgraphia and/or dyscalculia. Since 1980, our school has provided an environment in which dyslexic students experience success and increased confidence with differentiated instruction that focuses on their strengths. Our school has 47 students between grades two and seven and 24 staff.
Why teach at James Cameron School?
We work together to build students’ confidence, changing “I can’t” into “I CAN!” This is done by following the Ministry of Education curriculum, but taught with adaptations and accommodations to maximize student success. We recognize that all students are diverse in the ways in which and the rate at which they learn – emotionally, physically and intellectually.
James Cameron School belongs to the Federation of Independent Schools Association (FISA) under the Associate Member Society.

The Community
James Cameron School is located in Maple Ridge, a rural town in Metro Vancouver nestled at the base of the Golden Ears Mountains 56 kilometres east of Vancouver. Our school is at the north end of the Golden Ears Bridge, which connects Maple Ridge to Langley and allows for easy transportation access.
Maple Ridge affords a high-quality lifestyle with access to an abundance of outdoor activities as well as cultural amenities. The community is full of small-town charm with big-city amenities. Additionally, affordable real estate makes Maple Ridge an attractive choice for families.

Lifestyle and Recreational Opportunities
Maple Ridge is known for its natural beauty, with the town centre minutes away from an abundance of outdoor recreational activities, including hiking, swimming, biking, boating, fishing and golfing.
The ACT Arts Centre is the heart of the arts in Maple Ridge and offers a wide variety of live performances, art classes and public events. Residents have access to three major lakes, provincial parks and over 200 kilometres of multi-use trails within city limits. It is an ideal place for outdoor enthusiasts, including equi-sport fans as the Trans Canada Equestrian Trail runs straight through the community.
Small-town friendliness, big city-convenience
Maple Ridge has the character of a small town with big-city conveniences. Recreational and cultural amenities include the Leisure Centre, art gallery, historic Haney House Museum and the Maple Ridge Museum. The history and heritage of Maple Ridge are easily accessed through the Fraser River Heritage Walk. Finally, the Ridge Meadows Hospital provides primary and secondary acute care as well as specialty services.

Salary and Benefits
We offer salaries comparable to those in School District 42 (Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows).
Application Requirements
Applicants should demonstrate an understanding of differentiated instruction and special education. Teachers must meet the provincial requirements for certification, tutors must have Orton-Gillingham certification, and administrators must hold a master’s degree, preferably in special education.
