Explore BC – A Province Brimming with Opportunities for Teachers
Are you looking for adventure, a place to live and teach, an environment that inspires to live life to the fullest?
If you could live in any Canadian province or territory, which would you choose?
In a Maclean's magazine poll, the majority of Canadians selected British Columbia. With our favourable labour market, beautiful natural landscapes, mild weather, and considerable lifestyle advantage, British Columbia is quickly becoming the preferred destination for Canadian teachers. BC is home to some of the most geographically diverse landscape in the country, from mountain ranges with powder-covered slopes to crashing ocean shores and fertile plains that produce some of the best wines in the country.
If you haven't heard already, right now is a great time to teach in British Columbia. It is an exciting time because there are a number of full-time teaching opportunities available province-wide. What's more, our province also has a new curriculum, which empowers teachers to be innovative and dynamic in the classroom, while also helping students connect with the skills they need to succeed in the future.
Where are my skills most needed?
As it has always been, BC is in great need of teachers in French immersion, special education, technology education, math, and science. But unlike previous years, our schools are also in need of teachers in kindergarten; primary, intermediate, and secondary grades. If you conduct a quick search on our job board, you'll find teaching opportunities in fine arts, music, ESL, outdoor education, PE, indigenous education, and other subject areas. You'll also find on-call teaching opportunities in nearly every single district. In BC, teachers teaching on-call can expect to work as often as a full-time teacher. The great thing about teaching on-call is that you get to experience a variety of classroom settings, work in more than one district in certain regions, and you get paid on-scale as you would as a permanent employee in a school district!
How do I decide where to go?
Whether you are drawn to the hustle and bustle of a big city, the warm Okanagan sun, tranquillity of rural and remote communities, or the relaxed atmosphere of Vancouver Island, there is a community that fits your image of the ideal place to live and work. In BC, there is no shortage of perfect places to live; the hard part is deciding where.
Make your decision by exploring the 60 public school boards, BC-certified offshore schools, and independent First Nations schools on our Regions & School District pages.
